Anyone been to Plum island this week? Planning an overnight tomorrow.
Been fishing the river hard the since Memorial day. The water clarity is back to normal but we're not seeing the usual slug of big fish taking up residence in the River that we normally do in June. There have been a few tides where guys reported slaying numbers of big fish but they have been few and far between. The fish don't seem to hold for more than one tide so you need to be in the right place at the right time. Could be the floods and heavy rains have disrupted the bait in the river. Hardly any sand eels to be found. Last week we had a couple large schools of herring outside the mouth for a couple days with NO bass on them. The blues have arrived offshore and the mackeral are scattering.
You can still find numbers of small bass around. I've taken fish on the Flats, at the AYC, on the Salisbury side, the bar at the Point and in the Mouth but I'm sure under Green #11 and along the Salisbury Reservation, the ocean side of the North Jetty will produce as well. People are taking fish in the surf behind the bar off the N jetty too. Mostly the same story...small. The bright side is that the small fish are pretty aggressive when the tide starts running and they'll crush surface stuff.
Small bluefish have just showed up around the mouth. Still and all, there are a few decent bass around but you'll have to work for them. Most of my good fish have come on an intermediate rig on olive/white striper dragons (snake flies). Quite a change for a guy that has 3 different full sinking rods rigged at all times!
Since the season's taken a funny twist or two I'm finding that its a great time to experiment: lighter tippets, new colors, reaquainting myself with droppers and plugs, and a few exploratory trips to other areas I'd normally not fish this time of year.
BTW Since this is a NH site, I'll add two words....Boar's Head.
