I've heard interesting things about the thirteen Mile woods section of The Androscoggin River below Errol.I've meant to go and see for myself, but haven't so far. Can anyone familiar with this area tell me a little about the fishing, access, etc Thanks MAC

Mac- That 13 Mile stretch of the Androscoggin is an incredible ride even if you don't wet a fly...but you will. Much of the water is slow and deep with lots of old pulp wood submerged in it. But there are also lots of great spots to pull over and fish. It is a Big River. There are some pieces of nice pocket water in and around boulders and some nice quick runs with lots of riffles and seams to try- but it's totally dependent on what kind of Dam releases are going on. I drove through there on the way south from Pittsburg last September and we were shut out by the "Damn" releases. So much water that we couldn't even wade. So check out the flows before you head up. Access couldn't be easier. You could almost troll out the window of your car as you head up Rt 16- the river is so close. There are muliple pullouts to park. Watch for the Ditch Donkeys if you are there before sun-up. It's pretty good Salmon fishing closer up to Erroll and I've caught predominately rainbows and browns furthur south . See the other posts here on the Alder Fly Hatch. Great place to camp is Mollidgewock S.P. . The River flows 20 feet from most of the sites. There is supposedly good pond fishing in the area although I've never had the chance to try any. It is a beautiful piece of our state- hopefully you'll get up there this spring.

I fish that area quite a lot. Its great water for rainbows. The fishing pressure can get a little heavy in the summer because as Squaretail points out, it's wicked easy to get access to the water. If you camp at Clear Stream Natural Campground in Errol, you can easily fish the 13 mile, the Clear Stream tributary, the Little Magalloway, Little and Big Diamond Ponds, and the tailwaters on the upper androscoggin all in 1 day with minimal driving. Hornberg's are always productive on this section of the river. Stop in at L.L.Cote's sporting goods when you first arrive in Errol. The guy at the flyfishing desk can tell you what's fishing hot at any given moment.

How easy is it to float that section of river - is it easy to launch a larger boat (aluminum), or is it canoe/kayak water? Is it worth while to drift and fish, or is it difficult to locate fish?

Are we still thinking about a get together up there in May?

My brother was up in Errol a few weeks ago and said Cote's has turned into some mega KTP style store...anybody know what they're up to?

The place is 3 times the size it used to be. Their pushing the 4 wheelers, guns and hunting equipment. I have a friend who lives in Rangeley and he says people from all over the North Country travel to Errol to buy guns. Good prices and a big selection of new and used. Their fly fishing selection is a little weak. One little area in the back corner. Not much stuff at all!

fessiewig,

I think we should wait and see for the 7th. I bet the water is going to be nasty with the snow melt. The 3rd weekend might be better. We'll see either way I'm game!

I'm there the 7th, even if I have to fish the Diamonds.

I wouldn't float tube any part of the andro up in that area but a canoe works pretty well until late summer when the shallows keep you from traveling from hole to hole.

That's a great brookie! Fish deep and there's no telling what you'll come up with

Now that is a beautiful brookie. Seeing it doesn't do much to grow my patience in getting out there!!
