Haven't posted much in the way of reports this summer. After a great June my fishing intensity really trailed off since my July trip to the lakes. Been keeping an eye/ear out through July and August but I haven't been out all that much other than to torment schoolies with my son or look into my empty lobster traps every couple days. There were some NICE fish (>40#) taken from the river on eels and live pogies during the dog days but it wasn't in the cards for me.
But now its time to get warmed up for the fall push along the coast!
By way of an oceanside update; I hate to say it but fall is just around the corner. Historically I think of Sept. 1 as the beginning of the push but for the last few years I've come to realize that things really get ramped up in late August. Small baits, juvi herring and silversides are dropping down out of the Rivers. We've had some pretty active feeds by small fish in the MMack & Plum Island Sound on those little baits. Last night I had small bass, moving fast on little bait up in Newburyport Harbor and down off Refuge. There have been some reliable reports of bass on peanuts along Crane's beach. The blues that were in thick about a week ago but have moved south to Cape Ann but most of the schools seem to be a couple miles offshore following peanut bunker. I've heard of peanuts along the Seabrook/Salibury shoreline but have yet to see any myself (I'm up there every couple days checking my traps).
This morning's drive to work (PI-Newburyport-Hampton Beach to Odiorne Point) saw birds working small bass up in Newburyport Harbor, one schoolie caught in the cover S of Boar's head, then no other signs of active fish to OP. Nonetheless I think I'll keep my waders and a rod in the truck from this point on.
The Cape Ann tuna thing has yet to materialize in any consistent fashion this year. There are still a few weeks left and I've put my office on notice that if I get the word, I'm gone! I've been holding off on much exploration b/c of the lukewarm reports and $3.00/gallon gas. I heard my 14 wt rattling in its tube just last night begging to be let out!
