Is there anyone interested in a fly swap? I'm looking for 12 tyers or so. You have to tie up eleven of your favorite fly and we will set up a box for everyone involved. Let me know if you might be interested.

Hello,
When is the swap due? I have a few commitments so I don't want to over commit.
I would be interested in tying a #14 or #16 Paraloop Mosquito.
Please Advise.

Not to butt in, but when could you supply the flys? I for one can wait a while for a #16 Paraloop Mosquito.

As I start my fly tying class next week, we are tying a parachute mosquito and a paraloop adams. So I will have material on had for the paraloop mosquito. I also have to tie 25 chili peppers for a Dec 1 date also.
I am definite that I can tie them by the Thanksgiving break. After all I am probably looking at 3 hours total time. But with 2 boys (1 -4 and the other 4 months) I have to add much buffer.....

What is the cut off date and the address to send the flies. Do you want toe-tags on the flies?
Please advise.

Ok let's get the ground rules down. I'm sorry that I wasn't around yesterday. I have been reroofing my father-in-laws house. So this is how this will go. Let's make the cut off date to enter as Saturday the 30th. Then does everyone want to fish these flies before the season ends or is later in the month ok for everyone? Everyone tie up one less than the number of people in the swap (no need to tie one for yourself). Please add toe tags to each of your flies (Size, Fly, Tier). After applying toe tags package the flies up in a durable container and mail them to me, I will then split them up and mail them back. Please enclose return postage with your flies. If anyone has any questions feel free to call me or write me on this board.

At the top of the fly tying page there are swap instructions.
Other than the closing and submission dates and any rule variations the instructions are pretty clear and we should use those.
I'd like us to set dates so Chappy can participate. Seeing as "Thanksgiving Break" is in November could we have the "submit by" date sometime in November. If you don't want to wait that long (strike while the iron is hot) I can understand and this is just a suggestion.
Chappy, if we choose to do this sooner than you can commit to, tie them when you can anyway and I'll run a swap later that you can be part of.
I'd rather have the cut off date in November as well. The 30th is next weekend and that only leaves a little more than a week to do these. Working 10 hour days and having an energetic 4 yr old doesn't leave me much extra time. But if your anxious to fish these that's cool. I'll make it happen.

Fess, I admit I did not see the rules at the top. Sounds good. As far as the date goes, that is exactly why I asked. I want a consensous so that we have a good swap. Chappy sounds like everyone wants your mosquitos so November sounds fine with me. It does look as if we need a few more tiers though. Let's get the word out and fill this swap up.

So put me down for #10 beadheaded golden stones. And not to suggest a rule change mid stream but what about including the recipe?

Hi,
I got 6 of them done over last weekend. I am SUPER PLEASED with how they turned out. I created this pattern on a whim not knowing how they would come out. I will be very sad to ship them out and they would have made a super addition to my and only my fly box. Rats. I should have picked a different fly. Can I change?? Huh? Can I?
(Of course I am kidding - I hope you like my creations...)
A few more to go and postage baby!!!

My flies are done as well. Being my 1st time, I was wondering what is the most common approach to: toe tag & info, and container? Some of the simplest things can be made so complicated :? I'm definitely one to over think & complicate things. Sometimes I wish I could just be more like a dog.

Since Old Man jumped in, that brings the total number of tyers to 11, so that is the number I'm sending in. Just so we are all on the same page.

I think that altoids containers are the best. As for toe tags a small piece of paper attached to each bend in the hooks with your name and the flie and size. I will ship your flies back to you in the container you provide so if you want your flies on the flat side ship yours to me in an envelope.

I 've had mine tied for some time and need to get a couple of envelopes, would it be better if they were padded? I'll try to get them out this week.
Sounds like great lovely week end :?
jhicks
10-27-2006, 05:43 PM
Plow, I really would suggest going down to the store and buying some altoids. You can throw the altoids out if you don't want them but the container is much better for holding delicate flies without crushing them. Your flies may not need protection but some others are more delicate. Envelopes crush the hackle.
Plow Jockey
10-28-2006, 09:17 AM
jhick, I do have all kind of altoids tins, it was the envelopes I didn't have. But did get them this morning and the flies will be in the mail no later than Monday.
Ever since I quit chewing the life savers and altoids seem to disappear rather quickly
Damn it's wet up here

Also I don't know how doable this is but what is the chances of all of us meeting this winter for a day of fishing or tying?

Last year a group of us got together at my place in central NH a couple of times to tie. We talked more than tied and had a great time. Hopefully we'll get something going the first of the year.

OOPS!
I just reread the thread and realized I had said I was tying beadheaded stones. I played around with the pattern and tried it several ways. I have six variations of materials and styles laying around now. I liked the looks with the mono eyes better than the beadhead so I went ahead and tied them that way. I forgot all about beadheads! As I get older I seem to forget more and lose more stuff.
If you had your heart set on a bead head let me know and I'll get a bead head to you. I used some metal nymph underbodies I've had laying around for years and had never used before. Since I've never used the metal underbodies or mono eyes before, please let me know how they work out for you. They should be heavy enough for most conditions and stand up to several trout. The beadheads are a simpler fly but they do catch fish. I think the flies I tied will do a better job for you but I could easily be wrong. Looking forward to the arrival of the flies.Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Hi,
Mailed the flies out this am.
I did a photoshoot last night and am realizing I need a dig camera with better macro capability.
What do you use to photo flies??

Chappy,
Good to hear the flies are in the mail. As far as the photo thing. I usually take a lot of pictures and finally come up with a good one. Trial and error.
A tripod is very helpful too
I'm going to finish mine up tonight they'll be going out in the mail in the morning.

Hi Fessie,
Thanks for the link. I found this last night. It is a nice homemade igloo saving about $100 in the process.
I also saw some a new setting option on my camera. I have a Canon S1IS and if I zoom long and open the aperture fully, I can supposedly have a focal legnth of 1 cm. I am away on business so i am dying to see if this works. Before I left, I zoomed all the way in and played with manual focus, but the results sucked. I also found out that the camera's autofocus works better for Macro than the manual focus. This camera doesn't have a macro mode.
I will post some pictures after tinkering this weekend.
