Hi All,
I am kind of new to tying but I am looking for some patterns that will work on fish at this time of the year. From what I understand that would be midges. What would be some good patterns to tie and have in my box?

i remember reading a recent article (cant remember which one sorry!) that had stated with regards to tying midge larvae: "if you start with the premise that the hook shank is already thicker than the body of the midge, you cant go wrong."
e.g.- keep bodies thin, all you need is thread, and something at the front to give the appearance of the head.

Best midge pattern I use is a size 20-24 nymph hook. A wrap of mylar tinsel and a peacock herl head. The mylar looks a lot like air trapped under an exoskeleton.
Remember setting a size 20-24 hook is just a lift of the rod tip. Those hooks are so small that they pretty much set themselves.

There a good selection of them here, guy is from Maine but I am sure the flies are from over seas. They are really cheap (0.50)

I can't tie anthing less than 18 with my Vise, that is a tough as well. Most of my local freshwater flies I buy here. I Tie all my saltwater and steelhead/ salmon flies.
Good Luck

The Stillwater comes out of Wachusett Resevoir in West Boyolston, MA and flows up into Sterling, MA.
Lowwall....I hope to be in the Quinepoxet on Saturday. I was hoping this warming trend we've had all week will wake up the fish a bit.

Natefish; If you like winter fishing get a MA licence. There is a Ton of water to fish and no crowds. In theory there is allot for fish to but I either suX or am unlucky, or a mixture of both. You seem to do well so you should clean up!

I keep it real simple...
size 20 hook
3 or four hackle fibers for the tail (optional)
palmered hackle
I tie it in black, brown, and tan and have excellent results in the fall when fishing the ponds for those "cruisers".

I TIE A SIMPLE MIDGE PUPA THAT ALSO DOUBLES FOR A CADDIS PUPA THE HOOK IS A DAIICHI #1150 SIZES 14,16,AND18.I MAKE THE ABDOMIN OUT OF ULTRA WIRE SIZE BR. THE COLORS I USE ARE RED BLACK,AND CHARTRUSE BUT IT ALSO COMES IN MANY MORE COLORS.I USE ICE DUB IN PEACOCK BLACK FOR THE THORAX. IF I WANT TO GET MORE FANCY I PUT A SHORT TAIL OF WHITE ANTRON ABOUT 1/4 IN LONGI TYE AN ANTRON WING SIMILAR TO A SPINNER WING ALSO CUTTING IT ABOUT A 1/4 INCH LONG THEN I USE PEACOCK FOR THE THORAX.THEY WORK GREAT WITH OR WITHOUT AN INDICATOR.TIGHT LINES THE OLD MAN.

A size 18 pheasant tail without legs is the best midge imitation.
The real issue is your presentation including vertical movement, tippet size and condition, and really perhaps the most important - timing. A fish gorging on midges will bite your fly when its time.
Good Luck.
