View Full Version : Winter Time Fly Swap Anyone ???
HarryM
12-28-2006, 12:59 PM
Now that the Fall-Christmas swap is concluded, does anyone have an interst in doing another one to take us through the winter?
I have joined every swap so far on this board, but never hosted, so I'll be happy to volunteer to host the next one if there is sufficeint interest. I was thinking about a swap with a February 15th deadline, with all flies to be in the mail by the 1st of March.
Outline: Limited to 12 tyers, and the opposite of the last one as in no flies smaller than a size 10. Anyone up for it ?

I'd would have loved to join in Harry, but I'm going to Hawaii the first week in February and will be tied up (pardon the pun) most of January. Maybe next swap. I would have loved too, especially with the "no smaller than #10" rule. I would have done a #10 streamer. Oh well, like I said, maybe next swap.

NH Buckeye - Glad that canoe is doing the job for you. More than just a few times I've thought about it and wish I still had it. Even though I bought a big boat, there are many times a good old square stern canoe is just the right tool for the job.

I'd love to participate but the next 2 months are too busy for me. You'd think with all the members you could fill the swap. Maybe I'll see you tomorrow night. I went last week but no one was there.

I've decided to tie an "Unusual Hex". It's a super bouyant foam and snowshoe hare fly I made up to fish Sky Pond.

I'll get in on this. My fly boxes have been full for a while now and it's barely even winter.
I've never participated in a swap before, so I just tie up 12 and mail them out right?
Also, I have a bunch of huge #2 streamer hooks and could use an excuse to thin them out. If anyone does any big lake trolling and would be interested in flies this size I'll use them otherwise I'll tie them up in casting size. I'm thinking of the bauman bucktail since i finally caved in and bought a hair stacker, and orange is a great "ice out" color.

I'll bite, and will tie my famous SMB. One caveat, I cannot complete until mid February, OK?
HarryM
01-06-2007, 07:20 AM
Wet Fly Action...by all means use up some of your #2 streamer hooks. Sounds like a nice change of pace. Wait until we have a final number on participants before you tie up all 12 - we may end up with a few less than 12.
alliette - absolutely rookies can participate. It's a fun thing to do and I'm sure you will like it. You probably won't let another swap go by without joining.
j_harper - no problem on the time frame. I just threw those dates out there. If possible I'd like to get them out to everyone and in the mail by 3/1, so if you can tie them up dring mid-Feb that will work.
The number has grown to 7 now - 5 more spots to fill

Good job Alliette! I have been hesitant to join because I am not really a technical fly tier and tend to tie things they way I feel they should be tied and not necessarily strictly to any patterns.
I would like to tie some of what my buddy Rob calls
"Noonan Specials" we have caught a bunch of trout and steelhead on these. Usually we tie them on a size 12, but they should work just as well as a 10. The colors are peacock hearl or blonds. I would like to do 6 of each color if that is OK.

Harry,
I'm on another swap, doing a double bead size 8 golden stone. I know Grousr just did one of these on the last go around, but my pattern is completely different, end to end. What
do you think? If not, I can do it in black.

Count me in and I'll tie a size 10 Bead Head Leech in black and olive. 6 in black 6 in olive. what do you guys think?
Not a problem - 1/2 will get black, the other half olive - just like lowwall will do a half and half. Thus, nobody really knows which they are going to get. Kind of adds to the mystery. Rookie tyers like alliette - don't stress on this - they don't have to be perfect. Some of my earlier flies caught fish just as well as my later ones - just let us know when you have settled on a pattern. Glad to have you participate, I'm sure you will like it, especially when you get your box returned full of assorted goodies. Thanks all for joining
You can mail flies here:

As i mentioned earlier, this is my first swap. Should i ship these in a fly box? I have a spare that would work.
I am almost done with my dozen. I'm taking my time painting the eyeballs because I have the time so they'll be a bit prettier than usual. I also took the opportunity to try out making some "genuine imitation jungle chicken" with quill sections and lacquer which I think turned out quite well. Having never tied this many of one pattern in one sitting (well, really 3 sittings spread over a week) I can say this has been a great learning experience.

A fly box is fine - as is any type of little box that is crush proof. Even if it's a nice box, no worries - whatever box you send them in will be the same box your swap flies are returned in. In past swaps, also I have sent them in a padded envelope, just for the extra peace of mind.
Oh and Troutaholic - Pink Ladies and Montreal Whores make excelent companions... :D I'll try to send girls named Olive and Goldie

HarryM
01-25-2007, 05:59 AM
Got lowwalls flies yesterday - they came out really nice. Well done lowwall !!!
Just as a reminder of the fly swap rules regarding including a self addressed envelope:
All flies are sent to the swap master. The swap master can either post an address to which you'll send the flies, this is not recommended, or he/she can PM each member of the swap as they join with an address to which they will submit their finished flies. The swap master will compile the submitted fly collections, and mail them back. Please make sure you supply a return envelope with adequate return postage to ensure you receive your flies.
Ship them in an appropriately sized crush-proof container. This container will be returned to you filled with flies from the other tiers. Remember some flies may be larger than yours, so make sure your container is adequate. Plastic fly boxes are good, as well as VCR tape holders, 'Altoids' boxes, or travel soap holders.
Place your filled box of flies in a self-addressed padded return envelope - do not seal the return envelope! Make sure you include adequate return postage. It is best to NOT affix the postage but to include it inside the padded envelope. Place your return package in a larger envelope, address it and mail it before the deadline.
Since this was your first swap lowwall - I'll let you slide. so don't sweat this. Just posting this as a reminder to the rest.
Thanks

 Oops...my last post regarding the flies I received on Tuesday I said they were from lowwall - after re-checking I noticed that lowwall sent his in a couple weeks ago, and that this latest batch must have been from truiteman. Sorry about that - like I said above, very nice flies truiteman - did not mean to look you over.
I have to be better at matching the fly with the "handle" of the person sending them in. I only know most of you by your handles, not the real names.

HarryM
02-22-2007, 06:28 AM
TGIF - I'll do it if I can. I know that you need to post the pics somewhere on the web, and the only place I have is my website. My website has a lot of other pictures etc and it is a pain in the butt when I mess with it in that way. I'm sure more computer savy folks can do it easily, but I'm not one of them. In the FFNH birthday thread, Sean mentioned that soon there will be the ability to easily upload pics directly to the site - that sounds good. In the meantime, I thought I read in another thread about a website called "photo bucket" or something like that. If anyone knows the website, lay it on me and I'll try to do it there.

Got a sweet dozen flies in from NH Buckeye today - they look very nice.
Since the other two will most likely come in tomorrow - and since we are expecting a blizzard tomorrow, I might not get them out until Monday. Often when we have heavy snow, our postal carrier may or may not deliver. The last Nor'easter we had I got my mail the next day, so I can't be sure what will happen. If they come on Saturday, I'll be at the Pelham FF show, so I won't get a chance to divy them up in time.

hope you will share your trick for shrinking all that info on that little square of paper.
I have Microsoft Office and one of the programs that came with it is MS Publisher. With Publisher, you can make all sorts of business documents. So I used the business card creator within that program because it allows me to make text boxes and/or picture boxes. I just put all the info that would fit on a business card, and it will print 10 business cards on one sheet of paper. It's pretty easy

Thanks for the flies everyone. Quite a few in there that I wouldn't normally tie myself and am not particularly good at. Should round out my boxes quite nicely.
And a big thanks to Harry for hosting.

This was the best swap I have been in to date......................loads of variety and creativity.
Thanks to all who participated.................I'll be trying a few of the flies this weekend on the salters of Red Brook.
Appreciate all your efforts Harry. It is a lot of work to pull this off successfully.
Tight lines!
Steve
PS: Maybe as the season progresses we could share a fish story about using one of the flies from the swap.

I recieved mine eraly last Week but have been real busy and trying to shake a cold. I put them aside and did not open them until I could really take them all in.
These are some great flies, I will use them as examples for my tying
Thanks!
Mike

Just opened mine. Very nice. I was intrigued by the wet flies, so I sat down and tried to tie a couple. It's not as easy as it looks!
Thanks, Harry. A very smooth swap.
