My close friends and I have been getting together lately on a regular basis to tie flies. I think it is the only thing keeping us sane right now. Fortunately, the sessions have been productive. There's really no time limit, we don't say, "o.k., we'll tie until midnight," or anything like that. Everyone knows when they're spent. Either a guy starts making thread wraps around his finger and or we find ourselves hovering over the fly ridden fish tank cheering on the guy jigging his new creation. The other night, around midnight, we decided to do some street casting. We tried throwing one of the largest flies I've ever seen on the streets of Manchester's West Side with the 9wt. Nate built, I think Kyle may have had a take. Street casting is kind of an alternative sport. You try to hit a specific target in the dark, at the same time looking out for street gangs and oncoming traffic. It is actually a pretty exhilarating form of casting practice, similar to some of the situations we find ourselves in during striper season.
My fly tying station at home was starting to get downright inefficient. I keep bouncing back and forth from steelhead, trout, salmon, striper, and tuna flies and it shows….

I finally got around to cleaning it yesterday. Kyle said that a clean tying station always inspires you to tie. I think we’d all be surprised at what fly tiers’ work shops look like. I imagine some true pieces of artwork have been constructed at some pretty hideous desks.
Speaking of artwork, the other night Kyle’s old man took something out of his pocket and asked Kyle if he thought Bug would like one of these. I knew whatever it was I’d like it, he’s always hooking me up with cool fly fishing stuff and letting me borrow gear. Like the time at Salisbury SP when my gear was tattered with holes and I was trying to stand up to my chest in water when it was in the low 40’s with downpour conditions. Tonight it was a fly, a very special fly.

So after a day or two of admiring the fly, Kyle created this to make sure I kept it safe!

As you can see, it was tied by the legend himself. The envelope has officially been secured to my fish wall with a 3/0 hook, it is one fly I won’t fish, or even attempt to recreate. This is a flawless fly.

Today I brought my tying gear back home and have a fat bag of flies tied for the upcoming season.

If things go well I’ll be able to tie a few more bags before it is time to unleash the salt stick.
