around what time of the year do these fish come up the coast? I guess I should say into the rivers and flat areas where you can get at them with a fly rod from shore? I thought I heard someone say as early as March, but that may have been more south of NH/Mass.

Last year they were showing up in the Merrimack River early May, in fishable numbers it would only be amatter of a week or so to be in Portsmouth Harbor I would think. There are some hold overs if you want to find some warm water discharges, you just might have some luck.

Hey Solid - Bruce has good info there. It seems that water temps and amount of freshwater coming into the estuaries plays a strong role. Early to mid May is typically a good time to start looking for them along the NH coast again - depending on some variables -like everything else in nature. I'm sure there will be a number of saltwater fly roders on the board that will be keeping an eye and an ear out so first signs in Boston Harbor - you'll know!
