Winni smelt running

I fished the mouth of a small brook yesterday and along the edge of the ice were a couple of active fish that broke water a few times chasing smelt. I would see the smelt dimple and then the swirl of a good fish. I tried a variety of streamers and it was the #4 Grey Ghost that connected. I only had the fish on for a few head shakes and he came off :(
My guess is the smelt run has started or will start in the next day or so and continue for 10 days or so. During the day they will retreat back under the ice or along the first good drop into slighlty deeper water. Good fishing is at hand!!

Glad to hear that you had some luck. I spent the day on Winnisquam with a buddy- put in at Martel's- and only rolled 1 fish. I didn't see anything else caught all day, but it's got to happen sooner or later!
