Jack Gartsides Gurgler for top water, 2/0 clouser white and gray and white, and leftys deciever red and white. Those flys in a variety of colors and sizes will take stripers through out the entire season. My favorite fly by far to fish in the Gurgler, top water in the spring is the way to go!

Wow - I agree! Nail on the head. Although, I have to admit I've never tried Jack's Gurgler...but I know from too many stories that they are effective! I have to get some! There are some little eel type paterns that work really well on some of the SW feeders down the Cape...but I think if you have a few of the above mentioned flies...life on the Salt is good!
p.s. we should move this great posting to the SW section!

yaa - I guess when I think or hear Clouser...I think chartruse so I just "assumed".....but BC is right again. Also, one of the slightly retired fly fisherman in my fly tying club said that Lefty is a big believer in "optics" and red throats. Eyes and gills. Makes sense - helps to expedite that "killer instinct".

I've read that chartreuse works well in murky water and black works best at night. Do you use simply substitute chartreuse or black saddle hackle for the white called for in the typical deciever pattern? What about the red and white pattern? White bottom with red layered over the top?
