View Full Version : A BIG Striper this Morning

Since I live within a half mile of tidal water in Dover, I often get up between 4:00 or 5:00 AM ( when the tide is right ) and hit a close spot for an hour. Then back to bed at 6:30 AM. Also saves gas. Leaves the rest of the day for other activities after my nap.
At 5:45 AM hooked a monster on a new big nondescript fly with Sparkle that I just tied. Took all my fly line, ( 8 wt rod) then the whole 100 yards of backing. The critical tug of war started with no backing left and no options remaining. Everything held. At 5:10 AM and an aching wrist, I slid a 40 inch striper onto the seaweed covered rocks. Suitable pictures taken both digital video and stills. As I said, back to bed at 6:30 AM; and now up at 9:00 AM.
Biggest fish I ever landed with a fly rod. I feel ecstatic and pretty lucky since I only fish from shore and never at night; only at dawn.

I am not very adept at using computers and digital stuff. As you have read in the past I am an old geezer; and grew up with iceboxes, etc. I'll attempt to get one of the youngsters in the family to clue me in on posting photos. To further tease and frustrate you, I have a full sequence on my digital video of fighting and landing a 20 inch wild rainbow Friday on the Androscoggin River.

Good Job Otter, can't wait to see it.
There should a fly rod forty club or something. The same as they have for the 50 inch mark. it is very hard to clear the forty mark on a fly, but with bait not so much.
Welcom to the FFiNH Fly Rod Forty Club. :D

Otter, nice job! I can't imagine having a fish take all my line and then still landing it! I also live in Dover and fish the tidal waters around there quite frequently. If you are going again shoot me a pm.

Otter,
Congratulations on the Striper! That's sounds like an epic fish.
I'd like to know more about the 20 inch Rainbow on the Andro. I have been fishing that river on average once a week between Gorham and Bethel this summer. Every second or third trip I have been making an effort to target big fish. For me this has primarily meant fishing some of the deeper holes I know with a tungsten bead head wooly bugger and a sink tip line. I have found some nice fish, but no fish in the 20+ inch class. I'm starting to wonder if I should go to a full sink line.
I'm curious if you would share what fly you caught the fish on and what methods you were using. Please understand that I am NOT asking you to reveal the section of river you were fishing. I'm only hoping that you might share how you caught that fish.
I'll be on the river again this weekend. If you would like to meet up some time give a shout.
Congratulations again on some nice fish.
Best,
Swede
P.S. Sorry to others if I have ended up hijacking the post.

I sent a photo of the Striper and another of the rainbow to Lowwall, who said he can post it here for me.
Also in answer to Swede, I will start a new Topic entitled: " Catching Big Wild Rainbows in Rivers"
