Got a decent 24” fish this morning, what was interesting is that during the fight he coughed up a bait fish he’d eaten.

Description: It was about 5 inches long and about 1 inch thick, with a narrow body shape. The coloration was tan over white, with gold flash along its shoulders, and more silver/white flash to its side/belly. The eyes were jet black, with a white circle around. The lower jaw protruded slightly.

Not sure what this was, after releasing the striper, I actually fetched it, took it on my boat, studied it and took a few snap shots.

Lucky for me, I’d just switched to a Joe Calcaveccia 6” large deceiver that did a very fine job replicating this exact bait fish! Had a few more takers, but none that got the hook, only nipped at the fly. Then it was time to head home.

But not sure what the bait fish was, never seen this type. Anyone know what it might be? Are there any good fish identification web sites out there?

PS, also saw a heron-like bird that I couldn't identify, same question, are there any good bird identification sites? I can't find any myself. None that had this bird featured, anyway.

Well I've been provided with 2 options for what the mystery bait fish was:

A young Pollock:

A Cunner (I'd never heard of a cunner, so looked into this fish further):

Though I found that both fish, when young, resemble the fish that I saw, I have to say that based on some details I recall about the appearance of the fish's skin, I suspect it was a pollock - a very common, and well known bait species. So unfortunately I have not discovered some new, unknown fish type. Oh well.

Guess I'll be using a pollock fly next time I go out!
