Looking for some assistance from you fine folks. I was wondering if anyone has a more realistic hellgramite pattern than the Murray's Hellgramite. I noticed that pattern just doesn't even come close to what one looks like.

Hellgramites are rarely found in the water column - they are a bottom dwelling critter that scoots from one crevice to another 'til they can find a good spot under a rock. If you find one, pick it up and drop it back into the water - they go crazy! They know that when they are exposed their lives are in mortal danger, and they behave accordingly, gyrating and twisting around madly. The beauty of Murrays Hellgramite is that all that loose feather and fur really moves in the water and very accurately replicates the behavior of a real hellgramite. Thats why it works. There are flies that look more like a Hellgramite to us, but the problem with most of the super-realistic patterns is that they don't behave like what they are trying to imitate, and therfore don't look right to the fish. When it acts properly, fish react, and strike. That's how they survive!
It's a great fly - give it another chance! Alec

PM me your addrtess and I'll send you a fly I use. I use a 3906b for the front of the fly and tie on just a hook shank for the second 1/2. (could use a full hook if you want) I use biots for feelers and tails and chenile for the body. I use a litttle red chenille so as it tumbles in water the slash of red shows. The 2 piece body imparts a realistic twist as it bounces along the bottom. I have not had time to take a picture and post as promised. With my meager computer skills it's easier to just mail one to you.
