I am wondering if Ellis Hatch is still tying flys for sale and if so how best can I contact him?
Any help is much appreciated.

Dave

I believe that Ellis only ties commercially.

I think he ties orders for Hunters and I know for a fact he does instructional classes with them.

Ellis ties some for Fox Ridge Outfitters in Rochester NH. He does some for Riverstone Outfitters as well. By the way Ellis finishes up his 24 years of outstanding service on the NH F&G Commission this week. He is the real deal when it comes to what he has done for sportsmen here in NH over the years. A Bill working it's way through the NH legislature will renanme the Jones Brook management area after Ellis. He is very deserving of this small token of appreciation, I hope it passes and the Gov. signs it.

Just to bring you up to date. HB 340 a bill to re-name Jones Brook WMA to the Ellis R. Hatch Jr. WMA has passed both houses and is simply waiting for the Governor's signature. There may be some delay because the House put on an amendment that said the State can't purchase the signs. I would hope that there are fly fishers that will foot the bill if necessary. He is still tying for many shops, but he does take on some custom tying if you call him.

What kind of money are we talking about?

Well, they are just routed wood signs. I can't imagine that they are terribly expensive. I heard Commissioner Carney say the the Wildlife Federation would take care of some of the cost. I guess the best way to find out is ask. Once the Governor signs the bill we'll have to ask the Director.

Once we get to the point where money is needed for the signs, maybe we can make an appeal for donations.

AS an update to the staus of HB 340 the Governor signed it into law. It will take effect 7/9/2005. The name of Jones Brook WMA will then become the Ellis R. Hatch Jr. WMA. In my humble opinion a very well deserved honor for a man who has dedicated a great deal of his life to the fish and wildlife of the state of NH. In reference to the funding to purchase signs I will let you all know if we need to dig deep here to re-sign the two entrances. As you may or may not know the dam suffered some damaage this winter/spring and the pond has been drained to facilitate repair. Unfortuately this comes at avery economically crucial time for Fish and Game. I know Ellis is collecting some money from donations to go toward the cause. I heard a rumor that it would require $200,000 to do the work. Now I don't know if this is a valid sum but at $50 a pop it's a lot of donations. It would be an excellent time to work on the pond in general to enhance it's ability to hold fish. It may be a great opportunity for fly fishermen to show how much we really care about our sport.

If someone wanted to donate money, is there some place they could send it?

I guess the question would be donate to which? As far as Ellis' drive to repair the dam:
Mr. Ellis Hatch
31 Harding St.
Rochester, NH 03867
Actually it would be cool if some folks sent a note of congratulations for the re-naming and/or stepping down from many years on the commission.
As far as the sign needs let's wait and see what we need and perhaps get some direction from the department. Maybe we need a tax free clearing house like Hackle and Tackle ( a fly fishing club Ellis helped found ) or one of the TU chapters. In any event let's wait on that one until we get some answers.
