Question, and the answer is no because..........
Can hair from a deer tail be used on an Elkhair fly?

You can always try, and perhaps you'll develope the next elk hair caddis. But, based on what I know about those hairs, it wont work as well as you hoped. Elk hair is from the body of the elk, as it deer hair. They can be substituted for each other, most importantly because both hairs are hollow and provide good float properties. THus, they make good wings and can be spun.

I am assuming that you are talking about bucktail when you say "deer tail", that is not hollow and not very course, can't be effectively spun, so it probably wouldn't be a great substitute for Elk.

What TGIF said. Most of my "Elk Hair" Caddis are actually tied with deer body hair. The fine coastal blacktail body hair, often used for Comparaduns. works very well for the smaller caddis patterns.

And "no", bucktail is not a proper substitute for elk hair.
