I just received the following email from Eldredge Bros.
Bob
Hello to All,
I wanted to pass this around for the guys at CCA New Hampshire who are battling this issue. They need all of the help they can get. Please take the time to read this.
Thanks,
Jim
SAVE OUR PISCATAQUA RIVER & GREAT BAY ECOSYSTEM!
We urge all fishermen, kayakers, boaters and people who use the Piscataqua River, Great Bay, New Castle beaches, Little Harbor and those concerned about our Seacoast waters to attend a hearing being held by the ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY.
WHEN: Monday, May 9, 2005 at 7 PM
WHERE: Portsmouth City Hall Chambers
WHY: The City is proposing an extended sewer discharge pipeline into the PISCATAQUA RIVER, which will discharge sewage that has NOT undergone any secondary level of treatment.
PROBLEM:
1) The City has not provided a study to show the sewer extension to discharge sewage that has received only a primary level of treatment will not block fish and lobster migration, which is critical to our GREAT BAY ECOSYSTEM and our economy.
2) The City has not provided a timetable to add secondary treatment to the sewage before discharge as required by the CLEAN WATER ACT.
3) Portsmouth is only one of 16 US cities/sewer districts still discharging primary treated sewerage under a waiver. Portsmouth has no timetable for implementation of secondary treatment standards now or in the future unlike the 16,000 other sewer districts across the country who meet the Clean Water Act standards.
ACT NOW:
JOIN THE COASTAL CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION OF NEW HAMPSHIRE IN OPPOSING THE GRANTING OF THIS WAIVER, UNTIL THE IMPACT ON OUR SEACOAST WATERS IS ADDRESSED.
