I just heard about this website from a guy at Dick's. Thanks if you read this, and thanks for the tips. (Yankees?)
I am new to fly fishing and also to the seacoast of NH.
I have fished my whole life fresh and salt water.
My question is,
Where in the Seacoast area can I practice with my new 4/5 wt. outfit and hopefully catch a trout?
Also what type of Fly / Nymph set up should I be using at what locations. Fast rivers Vs. Ponds?
I appreciate any and all feedbacks.
Thanks.
Try the Lamprey River in Durham at Wiswall Dam. It is well stocked and you have a decent chance to get a trout. Try a nymph--perhaps a bead head--in the fast water and in the pool below the dam. Also try a wooly bugger. If you see any fish rising, try an elk hair. After you park, walk across the bridge and down to the power line pool. You can wade in a little way and you'll have plenty of room to practice your casting. If you see other fly fishermen, introduce yourself. Most people will tell you what flies they are using. We'll probably want to sign you up for TU.

I'd break down and buy a Saltwater setup. Put in the time and it will well be worth your money!!!!!!

I was out today practicing my casting at the res. in exeter and I broke my rod! Told you I was a newbie!
I had a 6 ft 4x leader with a 2 ft tippet and #12 march brown nymph.
Was doing okay practicing thought I had a bite and set the hook and SNAP.
Is this a newbie mistake? My rod is a light weight gallatin exec. 7ft 4wt.
I guees I got a cheapo I paid 125 for rod reel and 5 flies and lines?
Any suggestions on what I did wrong or was the equipment part of my malfunction?
Really bummed out But will not quit I started to get the feel of casting and placing the fly.

The break in the rod happened a 1/4 inch below the joint for the 2 pieces.
I am used to light weight tackles and that is why I went with such a small setup in the fly rod. Obvious mistake!
Maybe a 5 /6wt anybody got suggestions?
I will want to fish for Bass, pickerel and panfish.
I have always been partial to ugly stik and mitchell for all my other fresh water rods and reels.
What are some good beginners outfits for fly fishing around New hampshire?
Hopefully the tackle store will give me credit towards a new set up.

Go to LLBean, get a 5wt for around $65. It comes with a rod tube. Best part is these are guaranteed for life, no questions asked. I broke my first rod slammed in a screen door and they replaced it no problem; I was out of there in 15 minutes. Good rods too.-V

V has given you good advice. If you want to up grade into the $ stuff later that's fine. Make sure you like the sport first or you'll regret it.
The only thing I'd add is think salt water and get a 9wt with it. Living in the hamptons, come this summer you will have stripers at your doorstep every day. These are the perfect fish, big, dumb, and always hungery. Once you get the swing of your area you can go out the day at nearly any tide and catch fish.

Come on up to Freshwater Outfitters in Gilford (Next to Lily Pond on Rte. 11) on Saturday May 28th and you can try out the whole line of Orvis rods as they are having a fly fishing expo day with casting clinics, casting demos, the ESPN Great Outdoor Games Casting events will even be set up. You can also talk to guides and casting instructors as well. They will even have some drift boats set up on the pond to try out--all is free!!
If you decide to buy a rod the Orvis rods are guaranteed and if you purchase the rod at Freshwater Outfitters you can get a free casting lesson. You can contact them at 527-9100 or just drop me an email and I can send you specifics.

Thanks to all for the response.
My Tackle shop says they will refund me for the Busted rod.
I may get up to Gilford for the expo sounds like a nice time. Good reason to take a ride. I'll watch the weather and bring my boy (5). Thanks for the info!!
I don't want to wait until the 28th to try again I will go to Kittery Trading Post or Dicks and get a 5 wt. 8'6"St. Croix med action. They are the closest/best selections to me that I know of.
I fish (surfcast) for striper all summer and the main reason I have started to learn fly fishing this year is to go after them using a fly rod.
I figured trout and bass would be fun to learn the basics of fly fishing before the strippers and blues get here.
Thanks for all the response's I am still looking for a good spot around the seacoast I will try the Lamprey Dam Hopefully this week! Will have to consult with my map book.
Take Care.

For the salt as a first timer, I would recommend a Redington 9wt. I got mine at KTP for $75 and it is still going strong. Also guaranteed for life by Redington. -V

Just called KTP, I guess since Sage bought Redington a year ago they only warrantee manufacturer's defects now. When I bought mine 4 years ago it was a full lifetime warrantee. Regardless, still a solid rod for the money.-V

Thanks V
Went to KTP today and got a Redington out fit
#6 9' ORF9062 RF2 5/6 9'5x 20lb/100
Little big but after my first problem I figured get bigger.
Felt real nice to me. compared to other stuff I have looked at.
They told me today that the rod is guaranted for life?
Hope to hit the water tommorrow.
Thanks again for all the tips.
I plan on using a # 12 March Brown possibly combo it with a wooly bugger.
Any other suggestions?
I will be at the Exeter river or Lamprey / Wiswall dam
