I'll be in downtown Newburyport on Thursday [6-5-2008] late afternoon/evening and was considering throwing a line out if there is somewhere near that is worth a couple of hours fishing from the shore/bank.

On a previous visit (last year, mid-summer) I saw folks catching schoolies from the south side of Salisbury Beach Reservation (i.e. in the mouth), but not sure about times to fish there relative to tides.

Does anyone have any info on:
- best times to fish above location (relative to tides)
- any other locations within 15 to 20 minute drive of downtown worth a try

Anything you are willing to share is better than nothing!

thanks, David

Things look good for you....I wish I could be there. Thursday's PM low is at 7:23, which means you'll be hitting the last of the outgoing (my favorite). If you don't mind paying $10 for parking (before 5, I think), I'd recommend driving out to the northern tip of PI and fishing the sandbars that become exposed as the tide drops. That are is about 15 min from downtown Nbpt. It is the "best bet" for getting into fish, in my opinion, but I'm sure other's might beg to differ.

White, blue/white, and chartreuse clousers on a 350-gr sink-tip are the ticket there.

Did you in fact mean the south end of PI? (which has a fee to enter I think)

Or did you mean off Northern Blvd or Old Point Rd. on the north end of PI?

thanks, David

Not sure about the road names but certainly the NORTH end of Plum Island (which is the SOUTH Merrimack jetty, relative to Salisbury). Head out to PI and then bang a LEFT at Surfland. Drive to the end of that road, pay your $10, follow the boardwalk out to the dunes, walk to the river and start fishing.

they only charge on the weekends right now for parking I think.

Weekdays are 8 bucks down there. The fishing seems to have slowed down over there. The guys fishing bait were doing ok but the fish were super runts, I don;t even think I've ever caught a bass as small as I saw them cathing this week.
