So I found my great grandpas' old fly box and the top 4 rows on the left are what he had in it...does anybody know what any of them are???

Now all I need is my new fly rod to get here.....:(

i just stumbled upon a old fly box my self, one from when i first started tying. i would show the picture on here but the flies are not that well put together to say the least. i see a hornberg in the first row then right underneath the hornberg is a fly resembling a bee which i have had success with at the contookoock, other than that i really dont know looks like a hares ear nymph in the third row along with a adams in the 4th. i really dont know all the names that well but looks like those flies should catch you some fish.

Good to know, those 4 rows came from a old fly box from my great gandfather, so i'm guessing they were tied a long time ago. Some of them are a little beat, but we'll see how they go

I recommend that you put them into a shadow box and don't fish with them. To replace the flies to fish with from Cabelas or LLBean's African or Chinese imports will cost you about $20. You cannot possibly replace the flies your Great Grandfather tied.

I am not saying it is like the watch in Pulp Fiction, but it is an heirloom and one that once it is gone you will have wished you kept.

Good Luck.

Good idea Chappy. I had some flies I had bought from Orvis about 35 years ago. They were a well tied set of flies. Needless to say, when I bought a new vest to replace a worn out one, in went the set of flies, which fell out and floated off when I pulled something else out. Been kicking myself ever sense for not holding them aside.

That actually sounds like a cool idea, it will be perfect for the wall in my fishing/game room in the new apt... never would have thought of that one...thank ya

I once lost a box my father gave me when I first started fly fishing at 12. It fell out one day and I can no longer fish the creek because when I go I spend the entire time retracing my footsteps and hoping to see the aluminum glint of a perrine box sticking out of the mud somewhere.Definately save it.....

And as to idenity to the flies. On the First row I see a Hornburg Wet. A Prince Nymph, and a scud. Dont really recognize the other two.
Next Row is I see a PT Nymph, and Bitch Creek Nymph
3rd Row mostly is PT's. 4th row are Adams an Adams Irresistable and a BWO.

I agree with Chappy on the shadow box idea. But if you insist on the Pulp Fiction route, be sure to pinch those barbs! :)
