I've found that in our rocky, acidic, tumbling NH streams, we have few decent mayfly hatches, decent caddis flights, but lots of fishy interest in terrestrials. I can usually do very well fishing rivers as described above through the summer and fall using terrestrial imitations almost exclusively. Does anyone else experience this?

Best regards,

Ya know, now that you mention it, I used to do very well with grasshoppers, crickets, muddlers, and ant's. For some unknown reason I've gotten away from them over the last 15 years or so. Perhaps my fascination with nymph fishing has something to do with it. I used to love dry fly fishing and engaged in it almost exclusively and now that I think back I did well "pounding" up fish, even in the dog days. Sometime we get side tracked in our effort to find the best way to catch fish. Perhaps the goal should be to find the most enjoyable way to catch fish. :? Now . . . listen to me preach.

in my opinion you can't lose with terrestrials.... I've often found fishing a mudler as a dry works great - I assume imitating some large terrestrial. I often throw one on when nothing else works, and it often results in a strike...

but I've found that a Yellow Stimulator works pretty well all year.
At least it does on the Souhegan (except early spring when the
water is still cold) for me. I've had some good days with it in Aug
when there are grasshoppers flitting around.
