I was given this book many years ago.

There are lots of good ones. This one covers the basics - tools, techniques, etc... Plus has a decent mix of patterns.

You'll find that once you get a feel for basic techniques and and eye for appropriate scale, you'll just need to see a picture of a fly to make a reasonable, if not exact, copy. After many years of tying, I look forward to getting my cabela's catalog every year. The thumbnail pictures in there give me lots of ideas for new patterns. For me, the best part of tying is to play around with traditional patterns and make new flies that work for me. It's amazing what fish will eat when flies are well presented.

I started with the LL Bean book by Dick Talleur. This gave me a good start in understanding the basics of the various fly types and tying techinques. Also, if you can locate a class of experienced tiers, that is extremly helpful.

I have the LL Bean and Orvis books and found both useful, but I got The Benchside Introduction to Fly Tying as a gift and think it is better for a newbie. It's great because it is spiral bound (and will lay flat) and is divided into a top section and bottom section. The top section is a compilation of recipes that note step by step techniques like "mount a post here" and then list the page that this technique can be found on in the bottom half of the book, so you can flip to that page without having to turn away from the fly you're working on.

You can get it from amazon or I'm sure your local bookstore could order it for you.

ride603,
The Benchside Book of Flying is an excellent book.
I would highly recommend all of the books from Dick Talluer. They are superbly written and his ability to show you tying techniques is amazing. His photos and tying instructions are very easy to follow. Photographs are excellent. And his "secret" tying techniques are great.
And his commentary on each of the fly receipies is worth getting all his books. I have them all and refer to them qiute often.

I'll admit to being a little out of touch, but I like the book by A.K. Best entitled "Production Fly Tying" (Without going upstairs to double check the title, I think I have it correct.) The book covers every technique I have ever had to use and then some! I like the tools and tips sections. The bit about using floral putty to stick down the lacquer bottle and the hat pin in the cork trick are worth the cost of the book alone.

I just started tying this past winter and found this book to be great. Has a lot of fly patterns as well as giving details on the techniques. Well worth the $30 on Amazon.
