I have been hearing diff things about the laws regarding carrying concealed and visible handguns.....Do you still need a permit to carry concealed here in NH?
Do you need a permit if you carry to and from the range or hunting and it is in a case in your truck????
I once owned and had a permit issued by my local Chief of Police....but no longer...and am thinking about renewing...what do I need to know when applying again???

If the gun is out in the open, then it is legal without a permit. If your handgun/pistol is concealed by ANY means, you require a permit. So if it's in a case without a permit, that is illegal. The permit is $10 and lasts 3 years, well worth the cost. You apply at the town PD in which you live in, and usually within a week you receive your permit, so long as you don't have any felonies or domestic issues etc.

I've had a non resident handgun permit for many years. All i had to do was send a photocopy of my MA license to carry and 20 bucks, and I had it in a couple of weeks. Renewable every four years.

I believe it's 4 years. Depending within the year you apply, it's 4 years from your next birthday. That way, it's easier to remember when to re-apply.

Sorry, I havn't needed a permit for a while now so I forgot the time limits :) I think they are a good thing to have either way if you own hand guns...

Relheok, are you saying it's illegal to have an unloaded handgun in a case while carrying it to the range?

Well, after reading the law, it seems no. However, once you leave that vehicle with that case, you are carrying concealed. But, after reading more it seems it all hinges on whether the firearm is loaded or not. I would be on the safe side and have the permit, so you are worry free, but that's just me.

This is where my confusion started...and I think I remember hearing the NH law(s) became more lax or less restrictive or.... most likely more confusing.....Do you need a permit by law if you keep a handgun in your home? Do you need a permit if you keep a handgun in your truck in a locked case...loaded or unloaded? I have no interest in ever carrying underneath my waders like some guys do.....I think that is asking for trouble....I was just asking because I am pretty sure the wording in the NH laws changed within the past 5 years....Is the permit a permit to carry concealed or to own and carry unconcealed? With all the gun hype since Obama and Hillary have come onto the national scene I was thinking like many others that now would be time again to just start thinking about it.....

They should be able to answer your questions. If I were you, I'd get the permit. It's cheap, and if they hand them out to MAssholes like me, you should have no problem.

You need the permit for concealed carry. No permit is necessary to own. You camnnot transport a loaded handgun in a vehicle without a permit.
