I have witnessed this same thing a number of times back when I lived and fished in Hawaii for over 15yrs. The Ahi (yellowfin tuna) , Aku (skipjack tuna) and a few Striped marlin would just be in a eating frenzy . We usually wouldn't start to catch anything til they broke up the Akule (mackerel) ball and then the surface water would just start boiling with tuna everywhere chasing the bait. Thats when we could drag some small jet head lures through the pile and hook up anywhere from 5 lb Aku - 150lb+ Ahi. However if you chose to troll outside of the pile and slowly drag a bridled 5-10lb Aku live bait you had a chance of hooking up one of the Big Blue marlins that was circling and stalking the feeding tunas. Oh the Good old days . I have yet to fish for the Bluefins since moving back to the east coast. One day I'll give it a try. Nice video find.

Here is a video that I managed to get this year. I had plenty of people on the boat so I just got to drive and shoot some great stuff.

I find it amazing that you would go after tuna with a spinning outfit. We would target the small tunas (5-20lb) with spinners but would never put them in the water when we could see the 50lb+ guys around . We always trolled the 50 and 80 Internationals when we found the piles. Ya I knew some guys who were into IGFA records who would go with spinners but it seems like a good way to lose a decent size tuna to me. Not to mention back breaking.

FYI.. I have laned fish over 200lbs on spinng and have caught them as high as 860 on conventional.
I know I should never have posted on this website. Just thought I would share. This is my last post.

with the appropriate harness and modern braided lines, the high end spinning reels are more than capable of landing the 200 or so lb fish in 20-30 min if handled right. The technology is impressive on these reels (and ou pay for it) an they can put out around 30lbs of drag without a problem. most guys are using 80lb braid with 100lb leaders and have no issue at all. As for the back breaking part, that is the case, but I would argue that its actually fun to feel the strength of the fish. I'm certainly not advocating being undergunned and jeopardizing losing/hurting a fish, but done right, it isn't any different then using conventional gear. I would say its more fun

FYI.. t This is my last post.
No one was questioning your ability to catch fish. Don't get your undies in a bunch, hang around.....
