I've been fishing the Cocheco and Lamprey Rivers the past few weekends and find the Olive Herron to be my most productive fly. Size 14 appears to be best. It got my thinking about whether this pattern is tied in other colors. I did a little research but cannot find any reference to the Herron pattern being tied in other colors. Has any one tied the pattern in something other than Olive? If so, what colors seem to work?...Thx...Paul

"Kype" posted this in regards the the herron fly

he describes an olive pattern but if anyone would know of different color schemes, he would most likely be the one.

Go Dick Surrettes book " Trout and Salmon Fly Index", p.52.
He gives credit to Nick Lambrou, as the creator of the Olive Herron.
I have tied the Herron in many colors, yellow, brown, red, woodduck, etc.
The style of the fly is what I think makes it so effective.

I thought there was a bronze mallard as welll. Peacock body, brown hackle, same wing. I've done well with it during the alder hatch.

I tie a herron with wood duck and blueish grey hen hackle. Probably my most productive streamer during the spring and summer.

Sorry, I meant a bronze heron, which is a different color mix of the olive heron

Bronze mallard is a whole other animal... Yet very connected.

Nate, does your heron fly have a palmered wing or a flat wing? I like the idea of dun hackle with a flat wing. Otherwise, it sounds like a woodduck heron.

Thanks to all for the quick replies. Looks like I have lots of options with the pattern!.....Paul
