I'm new into fly fishing, having crossed through baitfishing, surf fishing with plugs etc, and and excited about the possibility of catching some nice fish in a flyrod. My question has to do with rod piece fit.

I was given an Orvis Trident that I thought I'd get a bit of practice on. Its a 4 piece 5 wt. I noticed that it is extremely difficult to get the pieces to fit together. Is the butt setion supposed to go fully into the mating piece? I don't want to force it if I won't be able to disassemble. Being new to this I don't know if I'm providing enough info, so if more is needed, ask away. Thanks for the help.

The sections do not butt together. There should be about a 3/16" gap when assembled. The reason for this is to allow for wear. The ferrules are tapered, and as they wear the gap will become smaller.

dont force it in too much, just fit the sections together until snug.

welcome aboard!

I'd venture to guess that you thought perhaps the rod was defective? When I received an Orvis rod that I had purchased online, I was just a wee bit upset when I couldn't get the rod pieces to fit flush. I thought something was lodged in the butt section (the rod is a two piece) or that Orvis just sent some poor work. After a little research (I don't recall if I went online or just read the documentation Orvis sent along with the rod), I learned that the "gap" that appeared where the sections were joined was intentional, to allow for, as Flyfish pointed out, wear. Once I learned that, I was a happy camper again.

Permit me to echo Petegas, welcome to the board!
