So I was out doing some fly fishing this morning on Beards Brook and then BOOMM!!!!! I was right in the middle of a civil war reenactment.. Just over the hill from the stream was a group with a cannon firing on 2 groups for advancing infantry.. Maybe 30-35 total...
These guys had a full camp setup, cloth tents, wool uniforms, the real looking deal. But no one was there to watch?? Practice I guess, I never got the chance to ask them?

I took the "let's see how far off the road you can get?" approach. Fishing wasn't great but still fun. When to a different spot, big pool, fish rising but a hardware guy on a rock covering the pool. I ask how he was doing, he said well and I said I didn't want to "poach" the pool but he said jump right in... He even cast to the spot were he said I should fish.. When I couldn't cast to the spot he offered his rock to me!!?? I did get a very nice 13-14" brown and broke off 2 nice bows.
A fun day and meet a nice hardware guy..

At least they were "live" soldiers. I think its kind of cool you saw that. I grew up a couple hrs from Gettysburg. There always have been scattered reports of tourists seeing either blue, or gray infantry marching by. The uniforms looked so authentic, and soldiers very serious. Upon going to inquire at park headquarters the tourists were usually told no one was practicing re-enactments in that area, or that day. Go figure.

Didn't even think about it that way.... At least there was another fisherman watching with me so I "think" they were real...
We may be doing a summer family trip down Gettysburg way in a few weeks, any good fishing spots?

Hey jturnskiguy,

I fished PA in the north central areas - Slate Run, Kettle Creek, Cedar Run, Fishing Creek. I never fished near Gettysburg.

Contact Charlie Shadan at The Evening Sun Flyshop, Pepperell, MA. He's spent a week down in PA fishing - returning tomorrow, or wednesday. He goes down every year & might have a better handle on where to go. Good luck!

Also, I did fish some eastern PA streams which are good: Letort, Yellow Breeches. Never tried the Little Juniata/Spruce Creek area - that might be closer to where you want to go - understand its good fishing now.

I grew up IN gettysburg. Head west of town towards chambersburg and fish the conococheague. yellow crick near bedford is only 2 hrs away, my grandfather took me there when i was a kid and was one of his favorite streams. You could always hit the yellow breeches in boiling springs, but you will not be alone. fish just above an below the little dam at allenberry playhouse, there are some real pigs in there, but perfect presentation is required. look online at the pa fish and boat commissions website for stocking info, adams and franklin counties specifically.
