No I believe its called a woodduck special, at least thats what they called it at american anglers when it was open in salem. Great swinging wet fly through the riffles. Can't seem to find them anywhere and would like to tie some up, but have none left.

Sort of looked like a zug bug, same body profile, however had tail with matching hackle in lighter brown, fished in size 14- 16 was deadly.

During my first season of FF, Al Hubbard (dryflie), turned me on to a pattern he called the "woodie". Simply a tail and downwing of wood duck flank and a peacock herl body. I experimented, with good success, with adding starling for hackle. I think it is probably taken as an egg laying or emerging caddis. That first season I fished the woodie and muddlers almost exclusively and did remarkably well. Now I carry hundreds of patterns, wonder what it would be like to back to two?

BT,
Was the hackle full, that is all around the hook or just under the hook (throat hackle) and was the Woodduck wing put on before or after the hackle, that is, is the hackle in front or in back of where the wing is tied in?

Vermonter,
You've described it perfectly. Woodie. That IS the fly. Thanks-

BT - You're welcome. Another variation you might want to try is to sustitute bronze mallard for the wood duck. Bob

Cabela's has a lot of synthetic "hair" in their catalog. I'm getting ready to try some "Super Hair" on some clousers. Looks like the hair has a little bit of kinkyness to it, so it might give the fly a fuller look. Never tried it before. I would imagine most fly shops or other suppliers have the same sort of material.

I think you can find the woodduck special on the Merrimack River TU web site under fly of the month. www.merrimacktu.org

Fessie- your right, thats not it. It basically looks like a coachmen wet fly (peacock herl body with woodduck wing and tail). All set, started tying them up last week.

The Woods Special is an EXCELLENT fly. If you don't have any you might want to tie a few.
