My tying skills are limited and I don't know the characteristics of the millions of different feathers. My question is what is the hackle? It looks very stiff because of the way it flairs out from the weight of the hook. The rest of it looks straight forward. Tail could be moose mane, the abdomen a wrapped quill and the wing could be substituted with a wood duck or mallard feather.

Its nothing more than an excellent quality dry fly hackle. Stiff barbs, the abscence of web. Or it could be one of Anna Nicole Smiths fake eyelashes twisted around that hook,,,,,hmmm I might be on to something,,

im with t.t. on this one, looks like #1 grade hackle. depending on what size you tie, i bet you could even use coq de leon, which are larger feathers whose fibers are much stiffer than regular hackle and are traditionally used for tailing on flies (popularized by AK Bests quil bodied flies).

also, looks like the wing could be teal

Paul:

Agree on the use of high quality hackle and the teal for the wing. There must be a post under the fly to wrap the hackle around? The tail fibers could be javelina hairs...I use them for tails on Colorado Kings because they are extremely stiff and hold up to abuse really well. Also looks as if there's a little black dubbing for a thorax......

Have fun!

Don't take this wrong, the fly is one of those creations that looks really great and probably catches fish, but the work involved in creating the fly, IMHO, is just not worth it. I'd say a parachute Adams will work just as well in similar situations and would be much easier to tie.

I tied some last night and it didn't take as long as you would think. I used a piece of 30 lb mono for the post and melted it back so it made a mushroom to hold the hackle down. The only problem is that I have cheap rooster hackle that isn't very stiff. Used the synthetic hairs for the tail. Basically it's the same thing as a bristle from a paintbrush without the nice tapered tip. Dubed over the body like the picture. I like these swiming nymph hooks they work good for hares ears too.

I don't know folks. You might want to try a Hungarian Partridge for that wing matrerial. Look at the white center stripe. I don't think you can get that with teal.
I would have to go with Fessie on this one. Given the weight of the wings, that baby just might end upside down more than right side up. It probably catches more fishermen than fish.

Looks like badger hackle to me with a hungarian partridge wing.

It kinda looks like those Waterwisp flies that were popular a few years ago. Although Ive tied some upside down dries for a friend awhile back,it just feels funky.Ill take a traditional dry anytime.

The hackle looks like silver badger. If I look closely it looks like it has a black center. The wing could be many things, but to me it looks like silver pheasant. Duane
