I have a Pfleuger Medalist reel that I bought because it was inexpensive, but after 3 seasons I've become attached to it and its performance is really quite good.

HOWEVER, I was hearing a little grit in it so I went to clean it. Quite a lot of sand on the friction drag mechanism held firmly in place by the factory lubricant. I'm pretty sure I can get it all cleaned up with some swabs and solvent. I was wondering what people are using to keep things lubricated/protected and operating optimally...particularly anything that won't hold stream grit.

I'm not sure about "not holding stream grit" but I use a teflon lube. As for the stream grit, clean the reel as often as necessary.

troutscout Also go to this web site to see good replacement parts for Pfleuger Medalist reels. www.onepfoot.com Bill Franke is a good friend and he makes wonderful parts for the Pfleuger reels.

Thanks Lee. If the Teflon lube works I won't need any but its nice to have a resource identified just in case.

Troutscout Does the reel have the original reel foot?? If so you should look into a new one from Bill Franke. The original foot on the reel was bowed and on a modern rod would not fit correctly, that is why Bill designed the onepfoot.

Is the reel a new one or old one?? US made or Offshore??

Its 2 years old. Not sure where it was made. I purchased it through Cabela's. The reel foot does not appear bowed. I've used it with my new TFO rod without any problems/slippage.
