Does anyone have a recipe for this fly? Any pix? I was told this fly was developed by a famous NH guide. I figure if I do end up fishing buggers it might as well be this one3.
Thanks
Dave

David, as reluctant as I am to rise to your tempting bait, I will. Simply because I do find the pattern quite productive on the Androscoggin during periods of murky water. The pattern that my good friend refers to is actually not one that you can tie commercially because of the time it takes to produce it. Bill Tapply showed the "Scoggin Bugger" in the Nov./Dec. issue of American Angler. The only errors in the pattern in that article is the thread size and the failure to mention the rib. So Dave for you, here goes:

Hook: 3XL streamer hook - Size #2-#6 Tiemco 5263
Head: black Cross Eyed Cone painted to match the body color and then epoxied.
Thread: 6/0 uni thread - body color ( not 3/0 rope as mentioned in the AA)
Tail: four large grizzly marabou feathers to match body color/with two strands of Krystal Flash on either side of tail. Leave butt ends long to use as a rib.
Body: olive, brown, black, or gray chenille
Palmered Hackle: Grizzly saddle to match body/tail color
Rib: Take the butt ends and gather the four pieces of Krystal Flash as one and counter wrap them over the palmered hackle
Eyes: I use the Prismatic stick-on eyes (usually red) and stick them into the insets on the Cross Eyed Cone and then epoxy over them.

So David when you decide to stop babying that new Hyde in the Merrimack and want to put some meaningful dings in the chines, let me know and I will show you some rocks that will accomodate you and perhaps let you see the "Scoggin Bugger" in action.

Rick
Rise to the bait??? Is that admission that fishing buggers is bait fishing? Thanks for the reply! I appreciate your willingness to share. Dave said that it was a good pattern and I figured thaty if I'm going to fish buggers I might as well use your patern. I'm gratified to see that it is a lot more involved than tying a standard wooley bugger. I won't feel as guilty fishing it.

Actually despite the attempts of one particular person to malign my character I"m not really an effete dry fly purist that will only fish bamboo. I'm a redneck that enjoys many aspects of flyfishing.

Sorry we couldn't get together for the trip today. Maybe next week. Dave and I went Sky Pond and got soaked. He caught one small fish and I got skunked. It was torrential! Again thanks for the recipe
Dave

i can attest that that fly is a good one!! rick gave me three of them and my last one caught the biggest brown I have ever caught on the andro....Now if he would just stop by and tie some more up that would be swell

Rick by the way thanks for the small wire and the very sweet looking terrestrial.....wow

If you go to www.midcurrent.com home page, go to the right hand side of the page and click on "Fishing Flies". About one third of the way down the page you will see an article titled "New England Natives: Brook Trout and Landlock Flies", click on this and it will bring you to the article. Sorry about the bogus link, I'm not as computer saavy as most of you guys. Good article though, another one of Rick Estes's creations is also pictured.

Maybe this'll work, Photofly. Copy & paste.
Owls roost, you could've been addressing me in your post to grousr. I just acquired trout-hunter's clacka craft recently, and took my first drift yesterday on the Merrimack from Franklin to Boscawen. I did absolutely terrible. I ended up side ways on a rock in the middle of a run. It was embarrasing, but glad there was no one around to witness it
