@Solid
I did poke around a bit on the TFO site but I noticed the shortest rod they offer in a 3 wt is still 8 feet. Thats a bit too long for beating around the bush I think, around 6 foot seems to what I am looking for.

Solid,
That is just where I was about to go. We have a bunch of rods you can try out. I bought a new rod last year and spent about an hour casting every rod in the store until I settled on the one that felt the best, a scott S4, yesterday my client had a high priced rod of the same weight made by another company and it didn't come close to matching the casting potential of the scott, in fact I ended up giving him my rod to make certain casts...and then he caught fish. So it is important to value feel and how you cast a rod over the price tag. Unfortunately I told this to my client and he claimed that he had done just that when buying his rod...would hate to cast the other rods he turned down.
I'll be working the shop tuesday and Bill and Janet are also more than helpful, probably know more about the products they carry than I do to be honest.

We do have shorter rods, but stop by and we can discuss just the type of fishing you are looking to do. A six foot rod is nice for the smallest streams but on anything over ten feet wide it is nice to have a slightly longer rod. I've got a five and a half foot two weight that I haven't put a reel on yet because I never get to many streams that small. My 8 foot four weight does just fine on just about all streams in the White Mountains.

I was looking at this outfit online and was wondering if you or anyone else has had experience with it.

Its the Superfine Touch series 3 weight rod 6'6" Full flex rod with a CFO II reel to go with it. I have stopped into the Orvis outlet a few times up there but they have about 10 feet of wall devoted to fly fishing and its all random stuff. Last time I was in they had about 10000 thousand dog beds just lying around.

Thanks for all your input Nate.
On the Scott site it states the S4 as being a fast recovery rod, I think I am looking for more of a slow recovery/full flex rod for the fun factor. Does the S4 behave more like that or less so? Also at 750 dollars, thats a bit out of my budget after I have added a reel/line/leader/backing.
When I was fishing the upper part of Ellis and the Swift in Tamworth I never had to make more than a 20 to 30 foot cast to catch fish. Most often they were much shorter. Surely a rod thats almost 7 feet long can do this yes? Several of the steams around where I live in this area are much smaller and not open around the edges like up there at all. Any idea if the NCA has any of the Orvis Super Fine series of rods in stock off the top of your head?

There's 2 schools of thought when it comes to small streams rods in regards to length. Having just fished with Nate on a small stream I know we are on opposite sides of the debate (and there's no right answer).
Some will say you don't necessarily need a shorter rod for small streams, and in fact since in many cases you aren't casting at all, just dapping a dry fly, some extra length might be a good thing.
I generally fish shorter rods because they are easier to deal with if there's any brush busting involved, and can easily cast the distances needed. I may give up some reach. On the small streams that I fish on Cape Cod there is excessive overhanging vegetation and the shorter length becomes a necessity to be able to set the hook and play the fish. If I wanted to I suppose I could have White Mountain small stream rods and Cape Cod small stream rods (and someday I might), but for now I fish the Cape Cod rods up north and they do fine.

If you're still considering the Super FineTouch rods by Orvis, the Orvis outlet in Kittery ME has (at least last time I was in there), a few re-furbished Super FineTouch rods. That's where I got mine and because it was a re-furb it was only $185 (though you don't get a warranty on it). If Kittery is within driving distance to you it might be worth it to check out. Kittery Trading Post is only a block away and they also have a respectable selection of fly rods to look at.

@ Bamboo Bryan
Have you had a chance to get some use out of your super fine touch rod? If so, how do you like it so far, thanks!
