Default #4 trolling streamers

I was forced to hang around the house for a few days and thought I would get a start on the spring arsenal for trolling. These are are the results.
Blood and Guts, Pumpkin Head, Green Marabou Ghost, Golden Demon, Joes Smelt, Wolfeboro bay, and Winni Smelt. These are size 4 3X long hooks. I prefer these to the traditional streamer hooks for the ability to keep the fish from twisting off.

Default ??!

Is he responsible for the Blood and Guts? Apparently this was a hot fly last year. I have never heard of it until a few weeks ago. A friend bought one for me to copy from A J's.

RE the "Blood n Guts" fly. This was developed by Kenny Welch about 18 years ago for trolling on the "Big" lake. He kept it to himself and a few close friends untill about 6 years ago.

Very nice ties. I'd never heard of the Blood and Guts either. Would love to see the recipe as well. Thanks for sharing.

Default Recipe of Blood and Guts

My version is a little off the A J's version. The original had darker red throat and tail, more of a wine red. I added a sparse underwing of fish hair synthetic to add volume and bump up the color.
All the stuff that looks like buck tail in the pictures is fish hair synthetic. It lays down better and because it's not hollow and buoyant, will not cause the fly to track poorly or upside down.

I used Grey Ghost Krystal flash because I like it. The AJ's flash was pearl I think.

I have no idea what Kenny Welch used in the original version. I looked on the web and could not find anything. It must be a very local fly pattern. I think it will fish very well. I will used it behind a crome 00 dodger on a short leader as well as on my trolling fly rods.

Tail and throat are red hen tips
Body is silver Mylar
Underwing is yellow FishHair
Wing is 4-5 golden pheasant crest feathers
Flash is grey ghost Krystal flash
Eyes are fake jungle cock *
The hook is a Mustad 9672
Thread is black 6/0

* I hate these and should have spent the money for real thing! They are plastic and stiff and I could see them affecting tracking. I will snip them off if they don't fish well.

Here's the pattern that kenny did--
Hook - #4-9575
Tail-golden pheasant breast feather-(red)
Body-Flat silver tinsel
Throat-1st-red gp breast
2nd-yellow calf tail
3rd-gp crest
4th-gold krystal flash
Wing - 6/8 Gp crests
Side/cheek - small JC from the bottom of the neck
Head - Black finished with epoxy.

He gave this to me a few years ago. It takes some time to do it right.

Thanks for the recipes. This will be a fun pattern to play with. We might just have lots of early season open water for trolling this spring. Time to get busy at the tying bench.

Will be tying up some probably some 10's and 12's as I do not do any big lake trolling. It looks like it is on the theme of the classic Mickey Fin - red and yellow
