Default New to Knots

Hey guys,

Long time fisherman, new to fly fishing and this forum. My question is in regards to tying leader to fly line loop...

Everything I find online shows loop-to-loop knots (leader loop to fly line loop), however I was wondering if a simple clinch knot to the fly line loop would suffice? It just seems so much easier than having to tie a loop in my leader every time I need to change it.

If my fly line does not have an integrated loop or I have flipped my double taper around I would tie on my own permanent loop of stiff mono with a nail knot and then a perfection loop drawn as tightly to the end of the fly line as possible. Be as neat as you can to gain the straightest standout and trim the tags tight to minimize catch points. I have had poor luck with slip-on premade loops. If you google these knots you will find lots of really accurate visual aids, and once you practice a few times you'll have it down.

Perfection loop is very easy. This is what you should use, and most leaders come with the loop already done. Does your fly line have a loop on the end?

you might try Gray's Loop. It takes a little effort to tie but it works well for me.

I do in fact already have a welded loop at the end of my actual fly line, my main concern was tying my leader to that loop. Looks like I'll have to learn the perfection loop!

Here's a link to a neat site that will help you with many knots. I.M.O. there's nothing better than a properly tied perfection loop on your leader, and loop to loop connection with your line. Hope this helps...

Learn the perfection loop. http://flyanglersonline.com/begin/kn...ectionloop.php

Use it to tie on any subsurface fly and you will catch more fish. I guarantee it.

Clinch knot to perfection loop will overtime bite in to your fly line.

I have never liked the splash of the loop on the flyline as it hits the water. There is a lot of mass there. I use, instead, a Jam knot to attach the fly line to the Perfection loop of the leader. YMMV
