Default If you had but two flies...

Out of the sake of sheer winter boredom I thought I would throw this out to the faithful.

I think we might all be surprised by the answers...

Any takers?

Hmmmmm.....tough question. My two most productive flies are probably a bead-head prince and an olive woolly bugger. But they're not necessarily my favorite flies to fish.

For ultimate pure fun best-case-scenario fishing, I'd agree with labtrout on a elk hair caddis (I just love how trout and salmon just whack that fly when caddis are coming off) and a marabou black ghost (nothing like teasing a fish up with a streamer just under the surface and seeing the swirl as the fish rolls on the fly).

I think it depends on the time of season and the water...for rivers it would have to be my Marabou Black Ghost pattern and a Tan CDC Caddis....or a Schroeders Parachute Ant...or a cream/tan Griffiths Gnat...or an insect green copper john....or a...........

I find this a very difficult question to answer as my fly choice has to change with the river and the fish. My favorite flies for one river or river type will not work in other rivers and that doesn't take into account all the various species of fish we fish for beyond trout.
So I guess the best I can do is offer two flies I have had fond memories of both of which are my own design. I have a #10 squirrel wing Atlantic salmon wet which is similar to the Ross special that has given me some wonderful Atlantic salmon and LL salmon. The other fly I designed as a kid which is a dark soft hackle that works in so many situations for brook trout to steelhead as an imitation for many stoneflies and mayflies through the entire season in sizes #14, #12 -#10 #8. I would be lost without it.
