Not to take away from this post, but I finished Reed's book a few weeks back and I highly recommend it. It provides a great deal of information on a topic that has been poorly understood and under appreciated. I found my self making all sorts of marginal notes throughout the book including sketching out fly patterns for future use. I can't wait for a salt water sequel.

s2ary,

Will you be at the meeting in Ipswich tomorrow night? I do have a bit of work already done on saltwater and UV if you have questions.

I can't make it. Keep up the good work, I'm looking forward to the next book.

Thanks,

Default Great Presentation

Reed's presentation to our chapter was a complete success. Though I haven't read my signed copy of the book yet, the research Reed presented is fascinating and thought provoking.

You may find yourself rethinking your recent purchase of the latest in tying materials after you read the book.

The New Scientific Angling will certainly appeal to tyers, but all trout anglers could benefit from the insight it provides into trout vision (check out the underwater UV photos).

Thanks for making the trip Reed!

Kevin,

Thanks for the kind words. I really enjoyed meeting a wonderful group of fishermen and learned quite a bit about the joys of hooking stripers on a fly rod from a kayak. I'm still trying to figure out how they "land" a legal-sized striper when it is pulling them around the Atlantic.

"I'm still trying to figure out how they "land" a legal-sized striper when it is pulling them around the Atlantic."

I'll never forget the time one towed me off the flat at the mouth of the Piscat sometime after midnight. At this hour the water looks deceivingly calm but the current still runs hard. I yelled to Solid and Rusty through the fog but had no functional light to signal them as it continued to tow me into the abyss. When I managed to regain some control the battle commenced. I spotted the headlamps and heard Rusty and Solid's shouts to locate me. By this time the slob of a striper was thrashing around underneath me, violently swaying the yak back and forth. This continued as my friends approached until my 10 wt. GLX exploded into tiny fragments. I reached for my 20lb floro leader and attempted to handline it. Despite the burning cuts through my tender skin I managed to gain enough control to where I was able to try grabbing it. This is when the fish surged and snapped off my oversized extremely natural looking mackerel pattern. The whole thing left me queasy and I admit that I was trembling. It was stupid for me to allow that fish to tow me out of the protected waters of the flat into the dangerous channel without a life vest, but I knew my friends would come through if need be, whether to tell the tale of a fish and a man, or to assist me in landing the beastly slob. I paddled back to shore after losing that fish and walked up to the bar on the docks and ordered a whisky and guiness tracer.

See, that is what I mean. I have never had a "Nantucket Sleighride" behind a ten inch brook trout.
