A pheasant tail nymph would have been the way to go if there were no rises. I like to carry the nearenuf in sizes 12-16 which seems to work for most of the darker mayflies here in New England.

Good idea. You only need 6X for flies size 18 and smaller. Generally you divide the hook size by three and get the correct tippet size. I.E. size 12 hook = 4X tippet. You can obviously go up or down...
